  • Confused newbie with F115/tach install issues

I have spent the better part of a rainy day trying to educate myself a little about a new to me Yamaha F115. I bought the engine (used) a few months ago with no controls or wiring. I bought a used 703 control unit and also bought a multifunction digital tach (ebay, used) that based on something I found when I googled it made me think it was compatible with my other parts.

I believe the engine is a 2001. The serial number plate shows:
    F115AET
    68V X 702836
    S

I have downloaded PDF's of manuals trying to find the most correct one, but the "AET" doesn't seem to be that common. For the life of me I can't figure out which service manual I want/need (lots of parts numbers, no years covered on the covers).

My biggest problem at this moment is determining if the tach I bought can be made to work with my motor. According to the Ebay ad, it is a "6Y5-8350T-D0-00". After having received it I realized that the included harness doesn't match up well with what I have. After more searching on the net I realized that images associate with that part number seemed to always show a tach with two buttons below the screen. The tach I have looks just like those, with no buttons on it. The harness that came with the tach has two plugs and four wires coming off of it...

the included engine harness has a 12 pin connector...

My motor has a ten pin connector with a single gray wire next to it, and this little three pin connector toward the front of the motor...

The 703 that I bought has the harness to the 10 pin on the engine.

I assume I bought the wrong tach, but since I know very, very little about the Yamahas in general, I am hoping that there is an adaptor that might save me.

I thank you for any help anyone is willing to provide.

This is a job for Boscoe,
but I may be able to contribute something.

    F115AET is the 'international' designation,
it appears your engine was not intended for sale in the USA
    (are you IN the USA?)
but I believe an appropriate Service Manual would be LIT-18616-02-18
I suspect LIT-18616-02-71 - a few years newer would probably apply
as would an older multi-lingual manual 68V-28197-ZA-C1
although that document leaves quite a bit to be desired...

Yamaha has made a bewildering array of 6Y5 tach variants over the past 20+ years
    you certainly don't have a "6Y5-8350T-D0-00" there
but I don't know what it is..

The two four-pole make it it look like it should work with your motor,
but what puzzles/concerns me is the yellow gizmo on the back
which I have not seen before...

If there were a black rubber plug,
you would surely be good to go,
at most changing the dipswitch settings beneath.

But that yellow thing looks like a 'pole selector'-
    - which on your motor, you would set to 12 -
but without a means to select 4-stroke vs 2-stroke
I suspect the warning indicators would not work properly.

The 12-pin harness is used with a tiller install,
not a 703 remote (which, as you know, uses a 10 pin harness)
but that's all I know about it.

The three-pin plug you've shown in your photo is the "Diagnostic connector"
for use only with a laptop and the Yamaha software.
Put the protective cap back on it.

Thank you, I will look for the first one. I have seen the multi language manual and it is a pain to read through.

      Also good to know. Thanks.

It didn't have one when I bought it but I will look for one now.

Would you happen to know what multi function tachometer kit would be the most direct application for a 2001 F115? At this point I am getting over bargain hunting and just want to be able to start getting the boat back in operation.
