I have a Yamaha analog tachometer on a new boat which has a F70LA outboard made in late 2018. I wanted to upgrade to the 6Y8 so that I can have hours and warnings. Would this be a plug and play swap of the current tach or is there wiring that also needs to be replaced?

the wiring needs to be replaced,
the current 4-wire 'trim & oil harness'
that runs directly between the engine and tach will not be used
You'll replace it with a different 4-wire harness,
connecting to a different plug on the engine harness
and then through several different bits to the tach.
