• Removing Pinion Stop

Hi,
i am trying to remove the pinion stop on my starter motor. the manual says to push the stop down, then remove the clips to get to the spring.

How much force is required or is there a technique as i can't push it down by hand. Can you tap it down with a hammer.

Regards

Kellaig,
Yeah, the Yamaha shop manual leaves a little to be desired when it comes to "how to" on some of the procedures.
Try using a socket wrench that will just fit over the starter shaft yet will line up with the pinion stop - tap lightly with a hammer. I also squirted a little WD-40 on the stop and let it soak a few minutes before I tapped with the socket and hammer. Once you get the pinion stop going a little, then you can push down by hand and remove the locking clips. Works for me .
Good luck,
