Dowel pin removal

Need to know how to remove the dowel pin (key) on my 2005 yamaha f250. It is the key on the shaft under the plastic water pump housing. Trying to remove metal plate beneath water pump.

It is called a Woodruff key.

There are many ways to remove it. A chisel can be used to drive it out. Vise Grips can be used to pull it out. Some cut a slot in it with a Dremel type tool, compress it with pliers, and then pull it out.

It might help to heat the drive shaft with a hot air gun on the side opposite from the key way and then chill the woodruff key itself. This will expand the key way and shrink the key itself causing removal to be easier.

It is without a doubt the worst part of a water pump r and r IMO.

It's called a Woodruff Key, half-moon shaped item, so if you tap lightly with a small hammer on one end and then the other you can sorta "rock" it out of it's groove....if you can get it to move then get behind it with a center punch and a hammer. Install the new one with some marine grease so next time it'll come loose easier...

Just use a small cold chisel in the gap at the top and then smack it out, easiest way takes 5 seconds

Those can really be a pain, especially if they are seized.

As others have noted, an awl, punch, or chisel will work. It only needs a couple well-placed blows to dislodge. You can file down the replacement a bit to make it fit a little better.
