225TXRP: 6 or 12 pole/pulse tach?

So we got the new digital tach on the boat. Initially we had it set to 12 but it didn't seem to register anything on the gauge...so we switched to 6 and got RPMs.

Now that we are test running the boat on a local lake it seems as if the RPM are twice what we would expect and am wondering if we need to try the 12 setting again on the tach this week.

Can someone confirm before we starting pulling the tach from the console if we should be set to 6 or 12?

12 pole equals 6 pulses.
6 pole equals 3 pulses.
10 poles equal 5 pulses.
see a pattern here?
the V6 Yamaha will set at 12 pole OR 6 PULSES depending on who made the tach.
