  • 1987 40ETLH fuel/oil question

I am a new user to this forum, have already learned a lot from reading different posts and look forward to learning more about Yamaha outboards. The question I have pertains to a 1987 Yamaha 40ETLH (2 stroke, 3 cylinder) motor I recently acquired. I don't have the owners' manual and haven't had any luck finding one online but was wondering if I need to add oil to the gas or if the oil reservoir located in the engine compartment does it automatically (I'm guessing it's the case but wanted to make sure). The only information I've been able to locate online was included in a factory service manual indicating the Injected Oil Ratio should be Precision Blend or 50:1 - now I'm really confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IF and ONLY IF, the oiling system has not been dinked with should you not run premix.

quick way to test is to mix 6 gallons at 50/1.
mark the engine tank with a sharpie.
run that 6 gallons and check for oil consumption from the tank.

if it used about a pint your ok to run straight gas.

the extra oil wont hurt anything.
