Yamaha V6EXCELXG 225

Hey guys I have a 225 that I assume has a bad control Unit Assy. When I disconnect the wire to swap out and use to limp home all is well. I have been told that this is for ignition with no advance . If this is the case is it traditionally the control Unit? If so the engine exceeds its value with the new control unit Assy at 2600 dollars. So my ? Is can a std V6 ignition system be put in its place ( kit upgrade whatever) and if so where to look and if not where can we find a better place on the part or rebuild,reman ect

however you can test the inputs and outputs to the micro processor.
worst case? a friend of mine needs the carbs off yours.
actually I have never seen one of those antique units fail.
