  • Yamaha Prop Shaft End Play: Is This Normal? SX 66 225 Saltwater Series II

Lubed my prop shaft this weekend. Big deal, huh? Anyway, when I put everything back together. Noticed that there was some in and out travel of the prop shaft, not the prop sliding on the shaft. The prop shaft moves in and out about 0.5 mm to 1.00 mm, just eyeballing it. There is NO rotational play on the end shaft, meaning you can't wiggle it from side to side. Just in and out. No gear oil leakage, seal around the prop shaft is intact and pliable. Shifts smoothly in and out of forward and reverse. No apparent problems except my paranoia about this in and out movement. Is this amount of travel OK? Thanks in advance. Specs on the engine:
Yami SX-66, Saltwater Series II, 226 HP v-6, TXRW. Made in 1998. Looking forward to helping out someone else when the opportunity arises.

the left hand turn case is the only one we need to deal with shaft end play.
the others typically are from .oo5" to about .03".
    for the 3.1L case.

What is a 3.1L case? I am just trying to find out if I need a trip to the repair shop. Thanks.

doesn't matter 2.6 or 3.1 right hand case.
you should see about .005: to about .03 endplay.
I don't think there is an actual spec.
        I think your scareing yourself.
did the drain magnet have excessive metal on it?
