  • Help!!! Need help figurin out if i have an 85 or 90

I just bought an outboard off craigslist for my starcraft and im tryibg to buy a service manual for my motor but its a mystery what i actually have. The bracket tag says its a 93 c85tlrr but the cowling says 90. Also 85s didnt have oil injection and my motor does. Also 85s didnt have trim/tilt switch on the bottom cowling, mine does. BUT 1993 90hp has linkage going from the con***** arm to the cdi box for some sort of throttle sensor and my motor does not have that it has the linkage going from the top of the con***** lever to the magnito just like lon the pre 1991 90hp’s and also like on the 85s. Also my motor has the starter solonoid towards the top of the motor like on 1991 up 90hp and also like on the 93 85’s

Is it possible somone has put oil injection on an 85 and put the bottom cowling from a 90 on it? Is it possible somone used 1993 85hp electronics bracket and electronics on a 1990 or older 90hp?
    Please help!!!

it is anyone guess what all was done to this motor, and I have no idea how you can determine what all they did, unless you find the people that did it and they tell you

What is needed is the engine ID. Begins with the number 6.

Helpful would be the markings that are on the CDI. The brains of the motor if you will. Also, any markings that you see on the carburetors.

Looks like you have a hybrid of some sort.

On the right side of the motor behind the carbs there is 68801 y-2 stamped

That is good. What is on the CDI? What is on the motor's data plate?

Should be on the left hand side of the motor on the clamp bracket.

Your motor looks to be a hybrid of some sort.

688 is the prefix for the C85TLRR model, as seen on the data plate. 688 L 423147

Your motor has a 688 CDI installed. Which it should. https://www.boats.net/product/yamaha...fa94364696d012

Your motor has a 6G5 rectifier/regulator installed which it should. https://www.boats.net/product/yamaha...fa94364696d012

What is strange is that your motor has 6H1 carburetors installed. Should be 688 prefix carburetors. https://www.boats.net/product/yamaha...a2e498994c9661

A C85TLRR should not have oil injection. It is a premix model.

The 6H1 carburetors and oil injection were used on other models similar to the C85. A P75 and a 90 for instance that both are oil injected. https://www.boats.net/product/yamaha...61cc38991176af

I am guessing that someone has crafted one motor from two.

So what should i do about timing? The bottom cowling and top cowling are for a 90 it has the trim tilt switch on the bottom cowling and oil injection matches that of a 90 but the electronic braket and all the electronics look like theyre from an 85 probably the same one they put the bracket on from. All the electronics have bullet connectors going everywhere so it makes sense now. The question is what year is my powerhead from so i know what service manual to get to set my timing correctly. Im guessing its got to be 1991 or lower because it doesnt have the throttle position sensor. Did all the 90s for some stretch of years have the same full advance timing setting? Is it possible to tell what year it is from the 6h1 on the carbs? What years did they use those carbs on the 90hp?
