  • 25HP Yamaha Outboard Fuel Problem?

I took my wife and friends out on Lake Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) last Friday evening. We traveled approximately 6 mile @ half throttle. Once we reached our destination and decided to return, I opened the throttle to get back home faster. After about 15 minutes or so, the motor cut way back on power. I managed, by opening the choke about 3/4 to get to an equivalent of 1/2 power (i.e., the motor ran the same RPM at full or 1/2 throttle) and get home. The motor ran relatively smooth at the half-throttle combined with 3/4 choke. How luck I was!

So, I wonder what the problem is. This is a very low hour 2-stroke engine with a 100/1 mix. The fuel seems to flow just fine, and on the trip back I opened up the fuel tank to see if it was a vacuum problem (nope). I can pump fuel to fill the bulb very easily, and the motor seems to run great. The bulb was clean when I pulled it off to inspect. But I hate to take it out again for fear of a worse outcome.

    Any ideas?

Running with choke on means the carbs need to be cleaned
