  • 2003 75 yamaha no start, no trim

2003 F75TLRB Yamaha 4 stroke on Bennington pontoon
I post this after the fact in case some of you techs have idea about what happened and to possiby help someone if this happens to them.

My boat has been basically trouble free but............

    Boat quit under power.
Would not turn over. Throttle trim would not work. Tack froze at 4. Horn and radio still worked.
    Other gauges dead.
Moved throttle shifter to see if position had effect.
Removed lanyard from kill switch and pulled it in and out several times.
Still would do nothing. Got pulled to dock.

    At dock:
Checked battery voltage and did a load test. Battery good.
Two fuses on motor - Found 30A fuse blown. 20A was good.
    Replaced 30A fuse, blew instantly.
    Disconnected all connectors at motor.
Replaced 30a fuse and started hooking them back up until fuse blew.
It would only blow with requlator red wire.
Took off regulator and back side was melted and burnt.
Replaced regulator and 30A fuse. (20A was stll good)
Made sure all connectors and wiring was back in place.
Still would not start with key switch.
Checked all fuses with ohm meter again, good.
Tried starting motor with screwdriver across starter relay terminals, started.
    Trim at motor worked.
Drove to boat ramp and loaded boat.
Pulled spark plug wires to kill engine and brought home.

    At Home:
After getting home tried all again. Verified my baseline, fuses all good, had trim at motor, no start at helm, could start with screwdriver, battery was charging, etc.
    Started tracing process........
Checked lanyard kill switch with ohm meter, good.
    Started disconnecting terminals and reconnecting.
Checked wires under boat for damage, none found.
Unconnected brn wire from starter relay and touched to positive to activate, good.
Started checking wire continuities and where I had power and where not.
Found I had no power to helm from motor 10 pin connector.
Went to motor to check 10 pin connector.
Found trim at motor was now not working.
Checked fuses again. 20A fuse was now blown. Was good before I started.
Replaced fuse. Now had power at 10 pin connector.
Went to helm and tried Key switch. Boat started!
Somehow I caused a short blowing the fuse and fixed something in the process, but what?

I plan to clean all coonectors and put dielectric grease on them.

    Any other ideas?

Do you happen to have the Yamaha Digital Speedometer? If so what is your voltage while running? It should be around 14.4V - 14.8V while running.

I know if you have battery/charging issues it will blow the 30 AMP fuse and this is indicative of a rectifier/regulator issue.

Mine didn't come with speedometer. Around 14.5v is my norm.
