  • Speedometer tube location

I have a 2005 Yamaha 250f four stroke outboard motor and am trying to find out where the speedometer tube is located on my motor. I recently got stuck in the mud and now my speedo isn't working and I'm sure that tube is clogged. Can you tell me where it is located on my motor and the best way to clean it?

Go to the very front of the gear case. Run your thumbnail up the leading edge and it should snag of the Pitot tube. It is several inches above the nose of the gear case. From the side it looks like a small half or maybe quarter circle.

Get a 3/32 drill bit and turn that bit using your thumb and forefinger while inserting it into the Pitot tube. It will auger out any debris that is in there. You will feel it bottom out.

It might be beneficial to back flush the sense tube in the engine pan that runs down the mid-section to the lower unit. You can uncouple the sense line and blow down the tube to try and expel any debris that the drill bit did not get out.

Keep the drill bit handy. Pitot tubes are known to get clogged often.
