I was on a sea trial after a year of not using the boat(1986 Boston whaler outrage). I have recently changed,spark plugs, thermostats, water pump, the lower unit grease(with new washers on the bolts), cleaned up the carbs and changed the shift rod(used the one from shiftshaft.com). After 15 minutes at sea, lost propulsion and the motor rev'd up. I was still able to manage to get to the dock with some propulsion( everytime i rev'd up the motor spinned like the transmission have failed, but still the propeller was rotating). I tried reverse and it worked ok. After a while, I tried to go out, and at first it looked like it was going to be ok, but then after 3 or 4 seconds, it started spinning again. I checked the oil on the lower unit and it was clean. Any suggestions on what would this be? The boat is in the tropics.
