command link fuel issue

my command link fuel gauge showed two bars. after driving for a while the gauge showed four bars so I, thinking I had more gas than I did in my 150 gallon tank,
i continued driving. the gauge did not move and I ran out of gas. I added 7 gallons of emergency gas and returned to my slip. the gauge still reads 4 bars or better than a quarter tank. Please advise to correct this misinformation.

I would check the sender in the tank first.
