Low Voltage

  • Low Voltage

    After on the water for a while with 2 Lowrance units operating and the rear live well pumps, when the engine is starter the Lowrance signals low voltage 8 amps. Stays on for just a couple seconds and goes away. The engine is a 2012 F-150. The battery is an Oddssey group 31, new in 2012. Ideas.

    Most people have 2 batteries
    One for accessories and the other for starting the motor, that would keep the heavy load of starter from dropping voltage too far on the electronics and other accessories.
    It also keeps you from running down the start battery with other things so you can still start motor if you drain the house one

    If it has worked fine in the past then check battery(load test) and all connections and cables for problems

    My guess you meant 8 volts instead of amps

      Correct, volts. We do have 2 batteries on a Perko switch. Always switch between the 2. Guess we should change one to the engine and the other to the house...

        why not simply use the builtin battery isolator that the Yamaha engineers so thoughtfully placed on the engine?
        wired correctly there is no reason to switch the batteries.
        the isolator is designed to charge a house/accessorie battery while running off the other.

        now to the low voltage issue, if the engine battery was actually at 8V ,other than the fact it would have quit running, your Yamaha tach would have indicated low voltage.

        most house/hull electronics are not on the engine ignition circuits.
        most have a separate ground and positive buss with circuit protection(fuse/breaker) that's what I would look for.
        dirty or loose connections on the hull feeds.
