  • Adjusting Ignition Timing on a 9.9

    Hi,
Does anyone know of an easy way to check and adjust the ignition timing on a 1997 9.9 Yamaha? I've read the manual and it indicated that a dial indicator is used to determine the correct position of the #1 piston. Is there any other way that the timing could be adjusted without using a dial indicator?
Thanks for any replies and info. It is a 1997 9.9 MSHV.

The indicator is used to make sure the TDC is marked properly , but a timing light will show you if it is firing at the proper time on the marks

Thanks for the reply 99Yam40. Will an automotive timing light work?

Yes, but I had to turn the clamp from my 40 year old snap on induction light where the arrow pointed (opposite)away from plug for it to work
