Fix or replace steel fuel tank?

I have a 6.3 gallon steel fuel tank that came with my 9.9 Yamaha 2 stroke that needs a new fuel gauge/pickup assembly. It was purchased in 1998. Would scrapping it and buying a new plastic tank be the way to go? Is there any benefit to staying with the steel tank if I can repair it? Thanks.

Buy a new tank, If hasn't already it will rust inside tank.
