  • FT60 Noise

    Hi Guys

Have 2 x FT60's on a cat .... one of them is making a loud "clunking" noise.

    - Sounds like it is mid leg somewhere.
    - Only makes the noise when in gear, both forward and reverse. Not heard in neutral.
    - Not constant, comes in and out.
    - Can't hear it with the prop off.
    - Very noticable at idle, disipates at speed but you can still just make it out though.

It's on a cat, so we took the leg of the good motor, and put it on the unit with the noise ... the noise is still there.

Now the weird bit .... we put the leg off the noisy motor onto the good motor .. and now the good motor has the same noise ... just not as noisy !!!!

We swapped the legs back and the noise motor is still noisy, they good motor is quiet once again.

We are bit stumped about where the noise will be coming from.

    Any ideas are welcome !

    sm.

Were water pumps replaced recently?...maybe those wave/spring washers on top of water pump not installed correctly to remove up and down movement of driveshaft?...

Are the props the heavy Stainless steel ones?

I have heard that they will cause gear/shaft noise at idle in gear train from pistons firing and ****ing(speeding up and slowing down of) shaft.

Maybe more clearance in one motors drive train making it louder

          Hi Guys

          Thanks for the responses.

There is plenty of oil in the g'boxes and no water leakage ... the water pumps were replaced ... but we swappped the legs and the noise is still on the motor ... and also its running standard alloy props.

Keep those suggestions comming in ....
