  • Help! No lower end power on F225?

I just bought a 08' 21' Azure Deck Boat with a 09' F225 4 stroke this summer. Wide open, the boat runs 53-54. Does great! However, from stop to on plane seems to me it takes forever. It seems so bad, that people will jump up and run up front of the boat to get her down. I would guess it takes over 40 - 50 seconds before she planes out, with the motor trimmed all the way down. Motor seems to run fine. It idles great, has what seems like plenty of water piss'n. But, it does squeel, like somethings wrong with the belt, after running hard and bringing it back down to idle. Certain RPM - around 2800 it does that. High end RPM is around 5900. I've changed the lower end oil, changed the engine oil, changed the water seperator filter. Running a Yamaha 19 pitch prop. Motor seems to be properly set on the transom height wise. Try to run non-ethanol fuel through it (can't always find it though).

Didn't really think I had a problem, until my dad took me out on his 2001 25' sea fox center console this last weekend. This boat is fitted with two 115 suzuki's (11 year old motors). I hit the throttle and it will throw people to the back of the boat and jump up on plane.

We have about the same Horse power and about the same weight boat. Acutally, his is heavier running 110 gallons of fuel.

My Yamaha is still under warrenty. Do you guys think something may be wrong, or is this normal?

You have a problem, I would have it checked out by a Yamaha shop

Are you sure the boat is not full of water and weighs a lot more than it should?

Look at the performance bulletin for a boat like yours with a F150 on it, I did not see one for F225

At first, yes. The boat was full of water. Evidently the water pump had a wire tie stuck in it. But, I fixed it, and doesn't seem like there is much water in the hull. So, according to that chart, the boat should be on plane between 8 and 20 seconds? Also, I forgot to mention, it is eating fuel for breakfast. It'll go through 55 gallons of fuel in about 6 hours of normal driving. That's average running about 3200-3800 rpm.

I also am wondering - that chart shows best fuel economy of 4000 rpm on a 150. Do you think that would be the same on a 225?

Looks like they say less that 4 seconds to plane with the 150.
Bigger motor = more weight but more HP should get up even better if running properly and propped correctly.
How many people do you load it with and how much do they weigh. big difference between 100-150 lb people and 200-300 lb

if your boat was full of water and it sat that way for some time there is a good chance you hull is water logged.
foam and wood saturated with water, if wood stringers and transom they could be rotting

have the motor tested in tank by Yamaha shop with test prop to see if it is putting out the HP it should.
and see if you can have the boat and trailer weighed to see how much more it weighs than it should. factory should tell you what it should be

If you find much problems you need to talk to the ones that sold boat to you.

Always test run boats and have survey done also before buying used boats

You may have an excellent point that I didn't think about. I don't think Azure has wood, but it does have foam core. Not sure if that would suck up water or not. If it did, I have no idea how to dry it.

The boat dogs like that with or without people on it. When it was full of water the first day or so, we almost couldn't get it on plane with six people aboard.

I guess I'll take the next step and take it to an authorized Yamaha repair center and see what they say.

          I appreciate the help!!

You know, I can't figure this out! I took your advise above and brought the boat to a yamaha dealer. They tinkered with it for two weeks. Said they send the download from the engines computer to Yamaha. Dealer said they only replaced the plugs and that Yamaha says, nothing is wrong with it...and the dealer says they don't know what's wrong with it. (They admitted it had a problem when I brought it to them). I took the boat home. Two weeks later we threw it in the river, and the boat was like a totally different animal...She came on plane within 7 seconds (three tests to confirm this). It appears that the engine was running with higher RPM's (was 5900) and now 6250-6300 and top end speed gained 3 mph. WHat gives? I am hoping that fuel economy will get better too. What in the world could they have possibly changed with this beast?

could have been as simple as a bad spark plug, it happens but is incredibly simple to find.
                its called a Kv tester.
most techs dont know what that is.
now your underpropped, usually a good thing on a toon.
rev limiter starts at about 6250.
