The following happened on the first 2 consecutive outings this spring. Between the 2 outings I replaced the fuel pump.
Engine starts immediately, go out and run around for a while under load (3 people in a 13' whaler), runs great from low speed to wide open. Stop the motor to put a skier in the water. Starts fine, idles fine (at high speed too), but as soon as I push the shifter (remote) forward, to put it into gear, it dies.
There is a mechanical lock out in the shifter that prevents shifting into gear when revving too high in neutral, is there also a switch (which might be bad, or goes bad after bouncing around for awhile) in the shifter which could be the problem?
Of course any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

...but it runs fine at first??

"the carbs need cleaning if it will not idle in gear"

Could this be the case even if it runs fine (in gear, at idle) when I first put the boat in?

The problem only seems to happen after I come out of forward, go into neutral, and back into foward.

Is there an additive I can try to clean the carbs?

      Thanks.
