  • 2010 F150 4 sk when selecting F or R

    Hi,

I think I know the answer but just want reassurance please.

Motor runs perfectly, however when I move gearshift to forward or reverse a loud clunk/metallic noise is heard when the gearbox engages.
Sometimes louder than others but it always does it no matter if I slowly or quickly select gear. I am running a std black SS 17m prop. Idle rpm is showing700 on gauge in neutral. All motor specs etc are std.

I believe this noise is common for this motor?

Any confirmation or advice would be welcome.

    Thanks.

    shift quickly and firmly.
yes its a slam shift dog clutch system, just like almost every other outboard on the market.
    it goes clunck.
    its a good sound.

I've read that Yamaha, on some of their larger motors, has actually designed some type of system to remove some or most of that "clunk" when engaging the clutch, like it was a bad thing?...Guess folks had complained about the "clunk"?

        Thank you for your feedback.
Yes, I thought that to be the case.
I have been advised to move lever into gear sharply, I just have to get used to it.
The reason the clunk is foreign to me is that I used to own a Etec and changing into gear was rather silent.
Anyway the F150 is a great motor and I am very happy with my choise.
        Cheers.
