  • Installing water pump

I am installing a water pump on a 75 hp motor. To remove the lower gear case, does the motor have to be vertical or can it be done at an angle? If it has to be vertical, how high up does it have to be to remove it?

I find it easier to remove the lower unit with the engine semi horizontal... On my 150, its helps to have two sets of hands, the 75HP, especially going back together, would be much easier with two set of hands..

You can do it with the engine in the regular up and down postion (as if running). That drive shaft from the lower unit is probably a good 2' long.

Also, once the splines from the lower unit clear the engine crankshaft (about 3-4") you'll have a lot more play side to side, up and down... The last 3-4" is critical and everything needs to be lined up.

If it doesn't fall into place, don't force it, something is not right....
