  • Salt Build Up

I have taken down my lower end on 90 hp 2 stoke. Getting ring nut off and bearing carrier out was a real problem. Anyway, they're out. The thread, which I have to rejuvinate, for the ring nut is packed with salt. I have performed some good tricks with Dremel tool and tiny screwdriver. Anyone have any other ideas of how to remove built up salt deposits. Thanks.

Salt will dissolve in water, but I believe what you are speaking of is aluminum corrosion.
I read somewhere that bleach water solution was good at breaking that down, but never tried it.
Wire brush would be my weapon of choice

Vinegar, Lemon Juice or any similar mild acid and an old toothbrush should work fine, the trick is to remove the salt and aluminum oxide deposits while removing as little of the remaining threads as possible. Re-assemble with waterproof marine grease, like Quicksilver 2-4-C....Good Luck!
