  • 1991 70hp charge problem

motor would not charge, upon inspection lighting coil was fried. replaced it with new one it then put out 50 to 80 volts. iI figured rectifier assembly was bad, replaced with new one -same thing put out 50-80 volts all over the place.
    any ideas?

Where and with what are you measuring this high voltage?
    AC or DC voltage setting
Do you have a service manual for the testing procedure + specs and a peak reading meter like it calls for?

      1991 70 hp charge problem

measuring at battery terms with digital multimeter on DC. like automobile it should charge at 14 volts or thereabouts, instead its reading fluctuating high 50 to 80 volts and I ran it that way for 30 minutes and it charged the batt to 18 volts, way overcharged in other words. just like the regulator wasn't working but same readings with new one.

Need to check resistance on lightning coil and test rectifier as per service manual. Any voltage test you run need to be run with all wires connected.
