  • 1993 elhr 15 hp lower unit gear oil leak

The unit is leaking from the area where the shift cam assembly goes down into the lower unit.

Can this assembly be replaced without a lower unit complete re-build?

The boot is held in place by a single screw, but that is not what appears to be holding the assembly in place.

Oil is bleeding through two small ports near the shift cam assembly. If I take the screw out, it bleeds there as well.

I see there is a seal on the diagram. It is a question of how to get to it.

There is no oil leaking from the drive shaft inside the water pump, or from the prop.

Thanks in advance for feedback and help.

      thank you

      Thank you for your reply.

As I looked more closely at the boot, it became apparent that it was not seated properly. I was able to push it down flush, tighten the screw, and the leak stopped completely.

I feel lucky that it was a simple fix.

I have no idea how it got that way.

Now I can put a new water pump assembly in and be good to go.
