  • 2004 200HP VMAX losing power at top revs

H all. Have above motor that has been standing for while, but had same problem before this. Gets to top speed and then loses power, as if starved from petrol. Replaced primer pump, clean fuel line and fuel, and previously did carbs. Dealer insist though that it was bad job (local mechanic) and that they will clean and set properly. Can it be this, or can it be something else - don;t want to be taken for a "ride". Thanks Dirk

You can always test the fuel supply system to make sure that is OK first.

But lets face it if it has been sitting for awhile the the fuel could be bad or even the fuel lines and pumps could turn loose of stuff that has been in them and when it hits the carbs after even a good cleaning it will plug them up again

Any chance you could have a restriction somewhere in the fuel system? Does the primer bulb collapse when you hit high rpm? If so check your vent first to make sure it isn't stopped up. If it is ok, you could have some trash in the tank that the pickup tube is sucking up and restricting the flow.

Thanks for the replies - had carburetors serviced and fuel cleaned out - running like a dream. Lesson learnt - get agents / dealer to do it first time around and don't wast money on just any "non-branded" dealership.

        Happy boating.
