Im looking at a 19 Steiger tomorrow with 2001 F115 with 400 hours. What are the common problems with these engines? This will be my first 4 stroke. What should I be looking for? Does it have a timing belt or chain? Thanks for any info...
They have performed very well, it does use a timing belt that needs to be replaced every 1000 hours. You can go to Yamaha's web site, www.yamaha-motor.com and read the owners manual which has maintenance charts and other info that might help you.
My son runs a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke on his Sea Hunt boat and it's a very smooth, quiet motor. That said, if I bought one I'd certainly buy a Yamaha Manual for the motor and study to get familiar with certain preventive maintenance items like fuel pumps, filters, injector screens, fuel/water separators, fuel stabilizers, etc., so the experience of owning and operating the motor will be as safe, reliable and pleasant as possible. The maintenance on the 4 stroke motors is more than some of the older and simpler 2 strokes. Good Luck!
Picked up the boat yesterday, took her fishing today, ran 25 miles according to gps, only used 5 gallons of fuel which was nice. Caught 2 Striped Bass, engine performed well, ordered service manual so I can learn all about this engine. Thanks..
