  • 1991 Yamaha 55hp ELRP Problems

    Hello All!

I just purchased an 18' Cobia with a 1991 Yamaha C55ELRP engine. We took it out to the boat ramp a few days after, launched it not knowing it wouldn't power.

    1) It runs fine on watermuffs, forward/reverse and neutral + full thottle.

Hestitation / Stalling when put in a trash can filled with fresh water. Neutral hestitation, forward / reverse even worse and stalling immediately under throttle.

    I have replaced/checked:

    Spark plugs
    Fuel line + primer bulb
Gasoline in 12 gal tank removed and replaced with 87 octane (+ethanol) and cured with Stabil Marine Ethanol Treatment
Filled up a pickle jar with 75% gas/oil and 25% SeaFoam, ran through it
    Compression check = 150/150 Perfect!
Disconnected fuel pump to carb and checked fuel pressure, it sprays evenly after each engine crank.

Now on my first carb (top, cyl 1), it is removed and the evidence is:
    • Cracked housing at top where screw is (immediately after choke butterfly), assuming this isn't the problem, I jb-welded it.
    • Sand-like substance in float bowl, it is white and grainy.
    • Rusty screw in float bowl, the screw that connects the fuel line nipple to float bowl (inside).
    • A few jets semi-clogged
    • Let the carb sit in Acetone all night, took out and sprayed Carb Cleaner in every Jet, put back together.
    • Missing dual carb gasket where the carbs meet the intake box (air leak?)
    • Missing small screw (out of 2 screws) on choke butterfly
    • Took out reed valve assembly and noticed corrosion on metal tabs (is this ok?)
    • Fuel Filter O-Ring missing (air in fuel line?)

    My plan:

Carb. Repair Kit (New o-rings, jets, gaskets, etc)
    Fuel Filter O-Ring
Fuel Pump Assembly (if above doesn't fix)

Is there anything else I should be checking?

    Thanks!!

Rebuilding the carbs should get it going.

Thanks! I already had that in my order from your site. Will post results.

Another question, does this part # include a kit for both carbs?
