  • chrome water pump

I have an 1987 yamaha 50 ELH. I plan on putting in a new water pump as there was no service history. I see that there is a chrome water pump option for use in turbid waters. I don’t know if I'll ever be in such water or, although it will never see salt water. Anyway, would this be a good idea(just in case) or would I just be wasting the extra money?

Waist of money unless you run in water full of stirred up grit/dirt.
the rubber impeller will still wear out, but the wear plate and cup will last longer.
I try to replace with the kit each time and the plate and cup come with it

Ditto on that!..if you're running in turbid or sandy water conditions you'll probably want/need to replace your water pump kit every year anyway, and the stainless steel cup and wear plate are pretty darn tough as they are! Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I just got done ripping up the old floor in the boat, so I'm going to need all the savings I can get.
