  • Bearing/ bushing install problem 175 yamaha

I have a 1988 175hp yamaha. The rubber bushing/bearing that goes into the upper housing just above the water pump was destroyed and brittle when we removed the lower housing to change the water pump. I have the new bearing and am trying to get it in. Put a little oil on the side but it seems stuck and not going in any further. I have been hitting it with a large socket and and a long extension. I think I am about to destroy it. Any suggestions?

Talked with Mike, Boatmasters owner. He suggested to put the bearing in the freezer or try heat. I put the bearing in the freezer for two hours, then put a little grease on the sides and hit it with a large socket and extension, Socket upside down. It easily went in. Reduced the size to a smaller socket to drive it in further and was able to put the snap ring on. Very easy if you know how. Now we do! He mentioned to put Hi temp grease on the shaft or it will burn up again.

Will put the lower unit on tomorrow and hopefully fishing again.
