    Anybody know what is the difference between a yamaha 3.5A and a yamaha 3.5AC outboard motor.

      I am no expert, but I think the 'C' stands for clutch. I.e. the 'C' version has a forward gear (and neutral). Reverse is obtained by swinging the head through 180 deg. Both are air-cooled (actually water is forced in from the prop pressure) so I don't think the 'C' is for 'cooled'.

      'A's commonly have a 624 serial number
      'AC's commonly have a 642 serial number

      They were sold with these serial numbers whether under the Yamaha or Mariner brands. The Mariner versions had what appear to be minor cost savings such as no fuel drain on the float chamber.

      Although the Yamahas may not have made it to the USA, my Mariner has a US label and spares are widely available on US websites.
