Does anyone know how to hook up a starter relay to a 1995 40hp Yamaha

red+ to one post
Neg - to the other post
but where does the thin black wire get hooked to?

On my 1996 60hp the black wire goes to ground. It is from the coil in the relay. That in turn, gets its power from the ingition circuit. The battery + to one side of the relay contacts. The other to the + side of the starter. The other side of the starter would then be to ground/battery -. I have found the service manual I purchased several years ago to be worth every penny I spent for it. Purchased from Yamaha. Their site makes it very easy to find and order.
