  • Yam 03-25hp 4 strok -starter sticking

We had been fishing for about an hour. However the next time I started the engine I could hear that the starter motor was still running. It took several times of turning the key off and on to stop the engine but the starter motor continued to run. It required me to disconnect the +cable on the battery to stop the starter.
I reattached the battery cable and the engine started with the starter motor still running, I headed back to the boat ramp and took the boat out. Now that I have it in the garage. What do I do to correct this problem?
I’m guessing that the starter disengaged enough from the flywheel to let the engine start but not retracting enough to stop the starter motor from running. Obviously sitting in the garage for a year things are sticky. I have not worked on any outboards but am familiar with engines.

May have a bad ignition switch, something is shorting out the start circuit. The starter relay may be damaged now and need to be replaced.
