  • 95 yam 40 backfire

Im having a backfire issue and my backfire is a loud chirp. Its coming from #3. I've cleaned carbs 2 times no fix. I did notice when i cover with hand intake on 3,backfire stops. i have 120# compression on all 3. I've swapped coils, replaced plgs. Boat has not been run in water. Its almost like timing is out. Can that happen? steve

Sounds like a lean sneeze still, have you checked to make sure it is not sucking air at fuel pump or intake gasket.

If it is only at idle the look close at the pilot passages.

Timing is easy to check with a inductive timing light.

Did you do the link and sync like the manual says after re installing the carbs?
Could be you just do not have it all set up properly

that so far is what i've been hearing "sync the carbs". on the short what does that take. I had a manual on cd and have misplaced it. thanks for the quick response.

        like 99yam says.
you still have a fuel issue.
        simple fix.
        sometimes nasty to find it.
but that chirp is a backfire in the crankcase due to a lean A/F mix in the intake behind the reed box.
