I've been offered a boat that has a 95?Model 175 Yamaha on it.

The motor visually looks ok in the power head area, however the engine has been left lowered in the water while on the mooring for the past 12 months and has some corrosion on the leg.

My question is - would one expect there to be much damage internally to the leg or to the power head area considering that it has been sitting like this for a while. Would the motor be worth keeping?

The boat is sitting on a mooring.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Regards Stuart

no real damage can come directly from sitting in the water other than if the gear case is leaking..first thing to do is change the gear case oil and check for water intrusion. look under the cowl..if there is no significant sign of corrosion you should be ok. that is a great motor. you should check compression and I would recommend a carb cleaning/rebuild

Thanks for your advice, I'll do that. I'm really trying to ascertain if I take the boat and motor how much I might be up for to get the motor sorted.
