You have the serial number but that is just part of the equation. In front of the serial number will be the shaft length letter and then the model prefix. The whole enchilada is referred to as the primary identification number. PID.

          It might look something like 6E9 S 553616. Which is a 1993 model 40FR

so how/where is the correlation done?

I have my PID but can't find much translation info past the change over in 2005.

Have you entered your full PID on this site? The fields are at the top of the page. I believe the letter before the actual serial number needs to be left out

Thanks .... but that is a parts pro site...I don't have access. I can't believe its this difficult to determine model and year from a PID.

I don't think you have to have any special access I have never requested anything and can look at it for my engine without problem, at least the area this link takes you to? If you enter your PID it will show you over to the right what you engine is year and model etc.

for the OP - here's how to get to where you enter your PID to see the parts for your specific engine

                      1. Go to Yamahaoutboards.com and click on "Maintenance" link

                      2. on that page, click on "outboard parts" link

                      3. at the top of the parts page, enter your PID
