  • Newbie's 1st winterizing... How did I do?

    2002 Yamaha 225hp 4 stroke.

Prior to any work I had a full tank of fuel - I added some Yamalube Ring Free, Marine Sta-Bil.

    1. Removed prop, Drained gear oil with drive tilted
    2. With drive level refilled gear oil with Yamalube gear oil - filled from bottom until gear lube come out oy top hole steady with no air.

    3. Arranged muffs with "Y" fitting.
    4. lower water intake covered with tight muffs.
    5. Short 1/2" hose connected from "Y" to Flushing connector on starboard side of engine (per dealer)
    6. Removed top silencer cover
    7. Removed intake plastic covers
    8. Removed oil filer plastic cover
9.Turned water on fully open- waited 3 minutes to fill engine
    10. Started engine
    11. Waited 45 seconds and "Tell tale" started "peeing"
    12. Engine running at idle for 15 minutes.
    13. Spraying fogging oil for 5 sec in each throttle body (3 times each)
    14. Engine smoking
    15. Shut off engine
    16. Removed Spark plug cover
    17. Removed each spark plug & wire
    18. Sprayed fogging oil in each cylinder for 8-15 seconds.
    19. Re-installed same plugs
    20. Re-install spark plug cover
    21. Drain oil with electric pump
    22. Remove oil filter
    23. Add 6qts of Yamalube 10w-30 oil
    24. Replaced oil filter with Yamaha filter
    25. Greased spline
    26. Greased hatch hinges
    27. Greased linkages.
    28. Connected a air line to the flushing attachment.
    29. Blow air through the flushing attachment.

Tomorrow I will clean the fuel filter and inspect the zinc's.

My dealer insists that antifreeze is a waste of money and that the engine is self draining.

Does all the water in the block drain regardless of the thermosats being open or closed?

Is there any chance that some water may remain in the engine?

    Thanks all!

I would have changed the oil and filter after flushing then start again on the water to circulate and prime the oil. If you don't do this it may not prime quickly on that first crucial start in the spring.

      Good job. Did you grease the nipple on the shift bracket? Its hard to see. #9 on the diagram;

Just curious #25 Do you mean the splines on the prop shaft? That should be coated with grease.
Also #27, Steering linkage?, If not, then I would also give that a good greasing as well.
          Everything else looks good.

            thank Scott for your reply.

yes I greased by hand the prop shaft and the greased the carrier fitting.

The steering was greased as well, I did not get the (1) fitting directly above the steering ram on the starboard side. I need to get a flexible hose. for that one.
