  • correct outboard paint color?

I have purchased two brands of paint for my '98 Yamahas. A P200 Black Max and an F15. The Tempo brand and the ColorRite brand are about the same, both to light silvery-gray. My motors appear darker, more to the bluish gray than silvery.

Anyone know where I can get a closer match? Available from Yamaha? I don't find a parts number in the catalog.

You can go to your local PPG or Dupont dealer and they can use an analyzing unit that will match the paint exactly, but this would require knowledge of basecoat clearcoat knowledge and professional painting experience and equipment to spray the material they would sell you.

I just did two V-6s after:
    - complete dis-assembly of the whole motor
    - sandblasting down to bare aluminum (sans powerhead)
    - priming with self-etching zinc-chromate
    - base coat with Dupont Basemaker (Yamaha color match)
    - clear coat with Dupont Nason

They look brand new now, but it's not cheap. I've done this on previous motors and the finish lasts far longer than the cheap paint the Yamaha uses on their motors.
