150 4 stroke 2007 reverse gear wont select

I cant select reverse gear, it is grinding then goes into neutral when I select it firmly. No problems going into forward or neutral, could this be the cable adjustment or something else, hope you can help - a bit frustrating,

It could be cables, cable adjustment, shift linkage or shifter problem inside grearcase, remove cables from engine and try shifting by hand.

You need the factory manual. There is an important adjustment at the shifter bracket/pivot on the right side of the motor. The index mark has to line up in neutral. This also affects the shift switch that retards the idle for smooth shifting.

Not hard to do, but you need a manual.
