Blinking Battery Icon

Why does the battery icon keep blinking on the Yamaha LCD Multifunction gauge on my console dash board. I have a 1990 130 Yamaha, it runs and starts good. Last month I replaced the battery because it was old but the battery icon keeps on flashing. The negative terminal on the battery is not tied into a common ground on my boat which is a 19' ProLine Sport CC. I searched for one but can't find any, could this be causing the blinking?

no you should not ground your boat but make sure all your battery leads are clean
