60hp yami no spark

hi guys im new here having problems with my yamaha 60Be . first of i got the engine from a friend and was told it needed a cdi unit so got one engine ran grand for a bit then started having a bad idle so we taught it might be the coils so we changed them, we then tried that but it wouldnt start up at all no spark . so we put the old ones back on . but still no spark. now today i got anoter cdi unit to test on is but im not getting spark . have checked the kill cord it seems to be on ok , how do i test a cdi unit.
any help would be great

need to test inputs and outputs of the CDI with a peak reading voltmeter or DVA adapter and regular meter while cranking motor
