Hand starting Yamaha 55 BET 2 stroke

Hi
I recently had an issue with a flat battery on my Yamaha 55BET 2 stroke and had to come home on the auxillary engine .
Tried to rope/hand start it but with no luck.
Once home I charged battery and checked charging circuit and electric started engine 1st time.

Why could I not rope/hand start it ?

Handy to know if it happens again!

If can pull it over fast enough it should start with rope.
