adding charging system

i have a 2000 40 hp 4 stroke , tiller handle yamaha. what do i need to add a charging system to run lights etc. where could i buy a used system and what should i expect to pay for this.

I think you will just need a regulator, boats net will be able to answer this properly but it would appear that he has been taken by damn aliens

Yes you would have to install voltage regulator, number 16 in this diagram Yamaha Outboard Parts 2000 F40MLHY ELECTRICAL 1 Diagram and bolts to mount it. Run a wire with inline fuse from red wire on regulator to positive post on battery and run a ground wire from engine block to negitive battery post.

thanks alot for the help. may be cotacted you you for parts. i really would like to add a elect starter in the future. i may problbly look for used parts such as brackets and so forth.
