  • 1994 115 2 stroke lower unit casing cracked

just got back from taking the kids fishing and found a 50mm crack from the outside edge of the gearbox(prop end) heading towards the the centre of the gearbox. oil still in box and no leakage from crack is this a common fault on yamaha lower units.and could it be drilled to stop the crack moving and welded or better to replace the casing

    thanks

It might be welded, have the welding shop look at it to see if can be done. It does happen in hard freeze climates when water is left in it.

May be corrosion between bearing carrier and gearcase housing.

I had the same problem, took it to a repair shop who said the weld would not hold and to take a dremel tool cut a shallow grove along the crack and fill it with JB Weld. Holding great even hit a sandbar and the JB held.
