  • F50T not running well above 2000 RPM

Our 2000 model Yamaha F50 has recently developed a problem when going above about 2000 RPM. It starts to miss badly and the performance is way down on what it should be. In fact it runs so badly above 2000 RPM that we have been using it just up to 2000 RPM without any issue. We bought the engine last Xmas it and had been serviced last summer.

Our first thoughts were maybe we had contaminated fuel so we drained the fuel tank and filled with fresh fuel. We also checked the fuel filter and drained it into a bowl for inspection. There were 2 clear liquids in the bowl and we assumed that the filter had separated some water which had built up over the winter due to condensation. Also the fuel smelled different to fresh fuel. Anyway we cleaned it out and refitted it. However the engine was still the same.

Yesterday, we ran into the previous owner who said it sounded like the high speed jets were gunged up and that could account for the reason that it was fine up to 2000 RPM. He said that about 2 years ago he had a similar problem and the local Yamaha service guy charged him £150 to supposedly clean the carbs. The engine was fine for a few hours after the "clean" and then the same problem re-occurred. He then stripped down the carbs and did a thorough clean and the engine was perfect (up until now). He thinks that the Yamaha service guy just sprayed some carb cleaner into each carb bowl.

So based on this information our thoughts are that we will have a go at stripping down and cleaning the carbs.

Anyone else experienced this? Is this a common problem with these engines and is there anyway to avoid it such as adding a cleaning agent to the fuel?

Probably do need to clean carbs and check fuel system.

      Any fuel additives needed?

Are there any fuel additives that should be added periodically to avoid these type of fuel problems?
