  • Which tach for which motor?

I have purchased a used boat with a Yamaha C40PLRU on it (1996 2 stroke 40hp.) I am interested to know what tach(s) would work on it, both OEM and/or aftermarket.

Perhaps this could become a sticky thread of there is a simple explanation of what models of Tach work with different types of engines over the years (Command Link vs. Non command link..)?

    Thank you.

Is this really that inexact of a science that nobody knows the 'recipe'

    Bump.

seems you need to decide what brand of tach you want to purchase and then find the model that would work with your motor.

also Depends on what all info you want and what your motor is capable of telling you

Strangely, that seems exactly like telling me to look up the information on my own. Perhaps I have already tried that, using that thing called Google.. and was confused.

There are a pile of Yamaha tachs listed that may work, I'm wondering if there is a code in the Yamaha model numbers that will help to determine which ones I could purchase new or used and have them work when they arrive.

Also, if there any any non Yamaha tachs out there that will work on this (or any other Yamaha engine)?

        Thanks!

Most any conventional Yamaha tachometer will work with your motor. Analog type or multi-function type.

Teleflex, Faria and a number of other companies also make tachometers that will work with your motor.

Start here to see what Yam offers

You still need to decide what all info you are looking to look at on the gauge.
if just RPM then any of then are good
But if looking for other things then you have less choices

                for a C40?
I would buy the cheapest analog tach, excluding faria, and roll with it.

                    I mean think about it.
what information do you need from a C40?
it does not have water detect.
it does not have a low batt voltage warning.
it does not have any oil tanks.
that pretty much leaves overheat alarm and RPM.

Speed and trim on some C40s at least mine has them
Then he could add temp and water pressure if he really wanted to.

All depends on what he is looking for

I ran a Mercury 25 HP two stroke for damn near 30 years without a tachometer at all. Sold the boat and motor and from what I hear she is still going strong.

Tachometer? We don't need no stinkin' tachometer.

just saying you have to have some idea of what you are trying to get before looking in my opinion

There are piles of new and used multi-function and analogue tachs available... I'm just trying to figure out which ones work with this engine.....

I'm sure there is an easy system to understand for the Yamaha tachs.. like all 6Y5s work with date to date... etc.

It will help more than just me.. I'm sure others with larger, fancier, more fandangled engines have similar questions...
