  • Hour meter 6y5-83504-11-00 questions

    Hi all -

This is my first post so please bear with me.

Per reading this forum I have learned that if I want a Yamaha hour meter that reads actual engine hours that the engine is running only versus key-on hours (which will be more hours and falsely and prematurely indicate when I need to go in for 50, 100, 150... etc... hour service) and that matches the Pro series (not Pro II) multifunction gauges on my boat now I need to buy the 6Y5-83504-11-00 gauge (Do I have this right?! I do not want the meter to read key on hours). I have purchased this meter and the instructions are not that good. The meter I purchased has a black, yellow and green lead but no blue lead and if I am understanding what others have said on this forum correctly these leads attach to the same color leads on the back of my existing gauges. Is this correct? If so do I need a secondary 3wire "splitter" harness to tap into my existing gauge wires? If so does anyone know what the part number for this is? Thank you in advance for your help!

don't think it makes a lot of difference really, how long to do expect to have the key on but the motor not running?

I think you need a 6Y7 hour meter. But maybe a 6Y5 will work.

You should find a small harness behind the dash that leads to the other gauges. Just plug the leads from the hour meter into open ports on the connectors at the end of the harness.

        Key hours vs engine hours

        Hi all -

When I bought the boat the multi function tach indicated 197 hours (or something like that). But when I took the boat in for 200 hour service the mechanic hooked up his laptop to my motor and told me that the engine only had 170 hours (or something like that). So the hours on the 2005 Pro multi function gauges are very misleading and I think this was corrected in the Pro II gauges that came out in 2007 or so. I cant see having the key on long enough without the motor running to add to this discrepancy but I still want to know actual engine hours.... have no idea why Yamaha didn't do this right the first time around with the Pro gauges.

          hahaha this is to funny.
its not uncommon to have a difference in the ECU hours vs the tach hours.
the tach and the three wire hour meter will only clock hours if the engine is running, that's the function of the green wire.
it goes to the tach send green wire in the 10 pin or ign harness.
          its not an airplane.

            Do what right?

Some folks don't care about hours.

Some folks don't have hour meters installed.

Some ECU's don't accurately report engine run time either.

              It might be.

Many many years ago when flying was cheap and I was doing it, you would be charged by the engine run time. Say $120.00 an hour. That is 2 dollars a minute, which was a lot back then.

The hour meter was a Hobbs type. Ran when engine oil pressure activated it. It was not uncommon for cheap bastard pilots to reach up behind the dash to unplug power to the thing when taxiing around. No one wanted to pay 2 bucks a minute waiting in line just to take off.

And then there were twin engine airplanes that had just one Hobbs meter. Some pilots would get to cruise and then shut down the one motor that provided oil pressure to the meter. They would fly along on just the one motor to save paying for rent time.

Recorded engine run time never came close to actual engine run time.

Key on hours mean nothing and engine hours mean everything especially when tied to warranty work. Ask Yamaha dealer or your outboard motor mechanic if you have doubts. If I understand what the differences are between the Pro and Pro II gauges correctly in my opinion Yamaha screwed up on the Pro gauges and corrected this on the Pro II gauges (getting clarification on this has been painful as well). I appreciate the informative and educational inputs from everyone that has responded as such.

Your opinion would be incorrect about a screw up. It is just a design feature. Nothing more, nothing less.

There was no screw up. Many, many, many hour meters run when just the key is on. Many run when the key is on and the motor is running.

If an operator is paying attention to what he is doing, key on hours would be very similar to what motor run hours would be. Certainly any difference would be lost in the noise. Yamaha is not looking to deny a warranty claim because oil was changed at 100.1 hours and not at precisely 100 hours.

The Pro Series runs when the key is on. The Pro Series II can be set up to run either with just the key on or with the key being on and the motor running. Like at Burger King, a customer can have it his way.

The Pro Series (6Y5) and the Pro Series II (6Y7) are both available today.

Thanks for the information - I now think my original opinion was incorrect as well. Thanks again for the great schematics too. Below is what Boats.net replied back in 2006 to the same question I am asking today about the same gauge (the stand alone 6Y5 hour meter not the 6Y5 multifunction gauge) hence why I bought the 6Y5 gauge (and it matches my other gauges). Perhaps back in 2006 the 6Y5 hour meter had a blue wire but the one I bought has yellow, green and black, which is the root confusion as to why I was pursuing additional information/clarification. So are you correct or is Boats.net correct? Something tells me you are and I am going to call Boats.net to get them to respond to this post.

The 6Y5 gauge records time engine is running, 6Y7 gauge records time the key switch is turned on. If you have Yamaha gauges in your boat now then it's just a matter of connecting the same colored wires. Gauge wires are
Yellow connects to key on power
                    black ground
                    blue backlight in gauge
green connects to tach signal lead

                      PS -

I can't reach the original boat owner to learn why he would have had the key on for 25'ish hours longer than during engine running. My boat has a *****ing motor that does not need to have the key on to run but perhaps the previous owner thought he did need to have the key on or was playing a radio for hours while fishing with the key on and engine off or was fishing at night with engine off but fore and aft lights on... I don't know.

Kids have been known to jump into boats to play around. Sometimes they turn the key on and forget to turn it of.
