  • exactly what does "turn over" mean?

as a small child, I heard my mother use the term, when the car wasn't working right -

since it was clear that she had no idea what she was talking about - I was never sure what she meant

and since then, I've never used it myself - but I see it used occasionally

such as this curious post today on another forum:

"However, on the Starboard engine I turn on the key and there is no alarm and no pump kicking on.
It does crank but does not turn over.
If I leave the key in the on position for about 30 seconds I do hear the pump kick on but not turn off.
It appears to continue running. The alarm continues to sound and I cannot turn the engine over. "

(btw my mother has been dead for years, so it couldn't have been her post)

To me "turn over" is the same as "crank". Crank meaning the starter motor is turning the crank shaft. The crank shaft is turning over (rotating) within the block.

But I read all the time where someone uses the words "turn over" to mean that it cranks but won't start or run.

NB - Is an alarm being on or off a good thing? I like my alarms to be off. Silent. Not sounding. No sound is a good sound. Yet people say "My alarm went off yesterday. What is the problem?"

My radio went off yesterday (timed out) and then it stopped making a sound. How can going off make a sound in one instance (a motor alarm) and yet stop making a sound in another instance (my radio)? Where is Gallagher when we need help understanding English words?

How does fairdeal put so much time on his F225 while spending so much time on his key board?

For those that don't know or remember Gallagher, here are some of his questions. For which I have no good answers.

Why is it that we drive through a parkway, and park in a driveway?
Why do they put the little "on/off" words on a light switch? If the light's on, you can see that it's on. If the light's off, it's too dark to see the words on the switch.
Why do you need a driver's license to buy liquor when you're not supposed to drink and drive?
If olive oil comes from olives, where does baby oil come from?
Why are they called apartments when they're all stuck together?
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
Why is bra singular and panties plural?
Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it sounds?
Why are there interstates in Hawaii?
Why are there flotation devices under plane seats instead of parachutes?
Why are cigarettes sold at gas stations when smoking is prohibited there?
If 7-11 is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, why are there locks on the doors?
You know that little indestructible black box that is used on planes...why can't they make the whole plane out of the same material?
Why do they call it a TV set when you only get one?
Why do they call that funny little statue a bust when it stops right before the part of the body that it's named after?
Why do they call them buildings when they're already built?...They ought to call them builts.
Why do they call men Cowboys? Bulls are the males, cows are the females... Men should be called Bullboys.
Why do Cowboys wear a spur on each boot? If one side of the horse moves, the other side goes with it.

I agree, turn over only means the starter turns the motor.
fire up means motor started and runs on its own

LOOking some more at my posts, they have got to be some of the dumbest posts around.

            What is wrong with me?

It is so stupidly simple that I fail to get it.

A apologize for people that have to put up with people like me.

Answer to why planes are not made from same material as black box's? To heavy, never get off the ground. They are heavier then you may think.

Also they are Orange not black and are not indestructible...lol

I bet he starts the motor and lets it idle while he snoozes in the cabin down below. The droning sound of a motor always puts me to sleep. That and the hot sun.

Yes, Gallagher would have picked up on the indestructible black box. Which as you point out is neither.

They generally say something on the outside like "caution, do not open". How in the hell are they supposed to get to the information inside if they aren't supposed to open it?

must take a lot of hours to run around there looking for those things

found a package of MJ once on the beach over here.
did not load it up, but called and told them where it was

Twin diesels are good for naps. Get a massage of sorts at the same time.
