250 yamaha shift problem

pops out of gear wont ingauge forward but does in reverse

what year is your motor ??
unhook your shift cable at the motor,run motor on hose and engage gears by hand, f-n-r,,,,if this cant be done by hand you have lower unit issues, if it CAN, put thottles in neutral, gear selector in neutral and adjust cable to fall over the gear linkage pin.
