  • 90hp bogging down at high revs

    Hi folks
First time poster so please forgive any breaches of etiquette

I have a 90hp 2 stroke AETO (1999 I think) that seems to have a demon living in it.
It was left unattended ashore for almost a year in a hot, tropical climate.
It is usually used in seawater for long periods

I’ve learned that the previous owner had a capsize and the whole unit was at least partially submerged in the ocean at the shoreline, although not running at the time.

So when we decided to try and use her again a whole bunch of problems

It looks like someone had used her with a clogged water pump and this may have resulted in overheating, and indeed there were tell tale scraps of old impeller hidden in the cooling system.
We cleaned it all out (AFAIK) and replaced the impeller, gaskets etc

Tried her again with the ears on and got her started although she was reluctant to start and ran rough and then died.

Next was pulling the carbs and giving them a thorough clean and blow through with compressed air.
Still similar problem so pulled the carbs again and this time soaked them overnight in vinegar

Cleaned out the fuel filter, which admittedly did have a fair amount of debris in there.

Reassembled and tried again and this time good result.

Put her in the water to go for a test run and was good up to about 2 thirds of full throttle then started bogging down with more white smoke than felt normal to me. Couldn't get her up on the plane.

Took her out of the water again and explored head gasket.
Compression test showed good compression on all three in a similar range (110-120psi)

Replaced all the plugs with new ones, changed the oil, new fuel, checked the lines saw nothing obvious and ran compressed air through.

Started testing the ignition with a multimeter and found that all the ignition coils were reading well under spec on the primaries.
The secondaries were giving strange readings:

    1- 272/119 /130 ohms (kept changing)

    2 – 42 Ohms

    3 – 31.4 Ohms

Seems to me pretty likely that the coils are shot and need replacing, but the question is this – will replacing the coils fix the problem, or is it likely there is something else further up the line that caused all three coils to fail in the first place?
Perhaps the charge coil got damaged by overheating?

    I don’t know.

    And suggestions very gratefully received!

    Cheers
